While most people train their entire lives for a shot at making an Olympic team, Dr. Brian Seaman's hard work has earned him three trips to the Games. A decorated chiropractor and a native Maritime, Dr. Seaman is actively involved in sports medicine in this province, and will be ensuring that our athletes are at their best in Torino this February.
"This will be my third Olympics," says Dr. Seaman. "I was with the host medical services in Calgary for the Winter Olympics in 1988, as well as the Canadian Core Health Team in Salt Lake City in 2002".
Dr. Seaman was selected to travel to Torino after applying to the Sporting Events Selection Committee (SESC) of the Canadian College of Chiropractic Sports Sciences. The college is the sports injury specialty organization of the chiropractic profession in Canada and they evaluate the candidates and ranks them based on a points list. A short list is then submitted to the Canadian Olympic Committee where the final decision is made.
"I received a call earlier this year advising me that I had been selected to the Canadian Core Health Care Team that would be assigned to the Canadian medical clinic in the main athlete village in Torino," he explains. "It is quite an honour to be selected from all the very qualified sports chiropractors in Canada, and have chance to represent not only my profession but also represent Canada at the Olympics in this capacity."
The third trip certainly does not lessen the excitement of the event. Dr.Seaman is very eager to get to know the athletes he will be dealing with at the Games. He will primarily be working with men's and women's hockey, short and long track speed skating, figure skating and curling.
"I'm looking forward to the trip and the exchange of ideas between the various members of the health care team," he says.
The Canadian health care team includes chiropractors, athletic therapists, physiotherapists, physicians and massage therapists. Each will be working hard behind the scenes to help our athletes achieve greatness this February. With people Dr. Brian Seaman in Torino, it's safe to say that our athletes are in great hands.
